Materials Holdout Validation

This track tests FluxMateria on materials properties selected by an external group, including out-of-family holdouts and domain-specific benchmarks.

Best-fit validators

Materials informatics researchers, DFT benchmarking groups, solid-state experimentalists, catalysis groups, and battery or materials-screening teams.

Recommended first challenge

Out-of-family holdout set. The external group chooses a property family and materials that are intentionally outside the most familiar benchmark families.

Properties in scope

  • Band gap
  • Density
  • Formation or cohesive energy
  • Elastic constants
  • Debye temperature
  • Thermal conductivity or heat capacity
  • Curie temperature
  • Carrier mobility, d-band center, voltage, capacity, and catalyst descriptors

Recommended metrics

  • MAE
  • MAPE
  • RMSE
  • Rank correlation
  • Top-k recovery
  • Error by material family
  • Error by property type

Useful baselines

  • Experiment
  • DFT
  • AFLOW, JARVIS, or Materials Project values where appropriate
  • Matbench-style ML baselines when split compatibility is clear

notes
Can FluxMateria produce useful property predictions on a material family selected by an external group, under a frozen split and agreed metrics?

Run a materials holdout

A clean materials validation can become an independent holdout report, methods comparison, case study, or benchmark addendum with row-level results.
